During the very first phases of pregnancy, the fertilized egg is carried from the Fallopian tubes to the uterus, where it implants after about seven days. In this phase, the tissue that will eventually form the placenta starts producing human chorionic gonadotropin, also known as the HCG hormone, which is essential for the development and continuation of the pregnancy. The early appearance and rapid increase in the concentration of the hCG hormone in the urine make it an excellent marker to confirm the beginning of a pregnancy.
